CBD has become the go-to treatment for many human ailments. A growing number of people are delighted with the results of CBD oil and, because it is completely safe for pets to consume a pet version* of CBD oil, consumers are now switching focus on the health of their animals as well. But exactly how much CBD can you safely give to your pets?
*Pet CBD oil will contain a different binding agent than regular CBD oil. Regular CBD oil may contain hemp or olive oil, but it is common for pet CBD oil to contain salmon oil to aid digestion.
How much CBD should I give my pet?
As a general rule of thumb, the amount of CBD you should give to your pet depends on the state of your pets’ health and on how much it weighs. For every 4.5 kilos your pet weighs, you should usually administer one drop of CBD oil once per day.
However, the advised recommended dosage may vary depending on the CBD producer and the product itself. It is common practice for each company to provide guidelines for the administration of their products. So, if you have a tiny feline, one drop ought to be enough, but if your pooch is packing the pounds, you will need to adjust the dose.
How does CBD work?
Like humans, cats and dogs have an endocannabinoid (insert link) system that regulates certain body functions such as sleep and pain. Like in humans, cannabinoids receptors can be found throughout the body of cats and dogs. The interesting thing about cannabis is that the active compounds are present can bind or influence these receptors. And because of that, our fluffy friends can also benefit from CBD, just like our human friends.
How long does it take?
You should not expect immediate results, but the positive effects of CBD usually appear after a short time. Treating your cat or dog with CBD requires you to be patient and consistent with your application, altering the dosage after an appropriate trial period has taken place.
Although there have been cases of fast improvement, it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks before you observe the benefits of CBD oil.
Are there any side effects of Pet CBD?
There should be no side effects when you treat your pet with the appropriate dose of CBD. If given too much CBD, your pet may display signs of being sedated, but this is not life-threatening.
It must be made clear that, although CBD is proving to be a healthy choice for your pet, THC is not, and you should never administer products that contain THC to your cat or your dog. Your pet is more sensitive to it than you are, and they will not enjoy it.
